Hardwood & Red Pine

Management

If you have 40 acres of mature aspen. Recommend harvesting 10 acres of aspen every 5 years starting with the older stands of aspen. This way the habitat will stay in top condition for a longer period of time. After aspen reaches an age of 22 years the stocking or density is less desirable for Grouse and woodcock. It is best to leave a few old  low vigor aspen trees that have a diameter of breast high (10")+ this is for the pileated woodpecker to search for  bugs and worms in the old dying aspen trees. Leave hemlock and cedar trees as this is the main trees that shelter deer during the cold UP winters.

Timber Cruise Valuation

Timber Cruise Valuation is necessary for estate evaluations, for purchase of timber land and for tax purposes like developing depletion accounts on the timber base that can be deducted to reduce taxes on the value of timber harvested. Example: if the depletion is $20 per cord and the land owner is receiving $30 per cord from the professional logger only $10 per cord would be taxed. Also remember that timber held over one year may be treated as long term capital gains. Renken has passed timber cruise for  the USDA Forest Service and The Michigan DNR Foresty work. 5. Any acreage that is at least 5 acres or more..
